    General Information

Liverpool is one of Europe’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities offering both European Capital of Culture and UNESCO World Heritage Site Status. As well as its worldwide reputation for music (Beatles and Cavern Club), sport (Liverpool F.C. and Everton F.C.) and humour, it has an abundance of architectural treasures and more museums and galleries than any other UK city outside London, including; World Museum; Maritime Museum; International Slavery Museum; Tate Modern Art Gallery; Walker Art Gallery; and Lady Lever Art Gallery.  Public art is right on our doorsteps and our rich cultural heritage is also exemplified by magnificent civic buildings, two iconic Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals as well as the oldest Chinatown in Europe. A huge regeneration programme has transformed the city with one of the major development projects, Liverpool One (award winning retail, leisure and residential scheme) being the largest of its kind in Europe.  Liverpool is a great city from which to explore the surrounding region, which offers miles of beautiful coastline, Championship links golf courses, ancient cities like Chester and the stunning scenery of North Wales and the Lake District.

Liverpool has long been regarded as the friendliest destination for delegates and visitors, a fact which is backed by numerous accolades including the city winning Condé Nast Traveller UK’s Friendliest Destination in 2010 and 2011, Group Leisure magazine’s Best UK City 2011, and Britain’s Best Nightlife Destination 2011 awarded by TripAdvisor.

Liverpool is set to become even more affable with its Delegate Goodnight campaign.

The Goodnight campaign will complete the experience of delegates in the city, providing recommendations for event spaces with panoramic views, restaurants and bars in which to wind down after a conference or host gala dinners, the best accommodation, as well as attractions from which to view the city’s skyline and sunsets as part of a social itinerary. Together, the innovative Delegate Welcome and Goodnight schemes will provide all delegates with exclusive discounts for Virgin Trains’ high speed service from London to Liverpool with on board welcome announcements, signage and flags at entry points into the city, and a free dedicated accommodation booking service.

ATM’s offer a convenient way of withdrawing Pounds (£) on a credit or debit card. Most banks have these machines, and all major cards are accepted (be sure to have your PIN code). There is a cash machine inside the ACC Liverpool (Congress Centre)

Banks typically open 9:30 to 16:00 or 17:00 from Monday to Friday, although some open slightly later on Thursday evenings and a few branches may open on Saturday morning until 12:30. Outside banking hours you'll have to use a foreign exchange office, which can be found in the city centre and also at the airport and railway stations. Some offices charge comparatively high commission rates for changing cheques. Avoid changing money or cheques in hotels, as the rates are usually quite low.

The temperature in June is quite warm; between 18 and 23° with very little rainfall. Don’t forget to take warm clothes for chilly evenings.

Major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, stores, cafés and restaurants. Be prepared to present a picture ID when using a credit card.

The local currency is the Pound Sterling and the sign for the Pound is £ (GBP). Euros are not used in England. The median exchange rate in December 2010 is 1 GBP = EUR 1.18

The UK, Scotland and Republic of Ireland use a 13 amp plug with 3 rectangular pins which is different to the rest of Europe. As such, an adaptor may be needed depending on the country you are coming from.

Service is normally included in restaurant, hotel and taxi bills, so any further tip should only be given for exceptionally good service. It is not uncommon, however, to round up the bill.

A travel insurance policy to cover theft, loss and medical problems is recommended. The Organisers will not be held liable for illness, accidents or thefts suffered by participants or accompanying persons during the meeting or their stay in the UK before or after the meeting.

Welcome Message from Professor Cheng-Hock Toh, Meeting President

    Professor Cheng-Hock Toh

    Dear Colleagues and Friends,

We warmly welcome you to the Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) meeting of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) at Liverpool’s UNESCO World Heritage Centre waterfront! Liverpool is famous for the highest standards in Creativity!

As setting standards is fundamental to all quality outcomes, our objective for this meeting in Liverpool will be to convey how the SSC is well-positioned to translate new knowledge into better patient care. Promoting cross-information exchange and engaging with external partners are key to deliver solutions for patients with haemostatic and thrombotic problems.

Developing future leaders is also key to the vitality of ISTH SSC and this meeting will be rooted in the themes of Education, Engagement and Translation. Attracting and training the best young scientists and clinicians can only occur if we present a programme that is interesting, challenging and directly relevant to improving patient management. This is my promise to deliver at the Liverpool 2012 meeting!

    With best wishes,

    Cheng-Hock Toh, MD, FRCP, FRCPath
    President, 58th SSC ISTH Meeting

Welcome Message from Anna Falanga, Chair of SSC

Henri Bounameaux, MDDear Colleagues and Friends,

Following the success of the SSC meeting in Kyoto, we will go back to Europe and I warmly invite you to a new and very innovative meeting in Liverpool.

As in the tradition of the SSC, the format of the 2012 meeting is designed to favor an active exchange of new important information and topics of research, and to stimulate cross-disciplinary collaborations. The conference will start with a strong educational program, providing an opportunity of intensive training for our younger colleagues. Then the meetings of all subcommittees of the SSC will follow and the results of the new ongoing projects of each subcommittee will be extensively discussed. This will provide the new insights into the most challenging practical issues in thrombosis and hemostasis, and also will grant an expert view on the standardization of basic and clinical research methods, nomenclature, preparation of reference reagents, and evaluation of new tests and new drugs.

Professor Cheng-Hock Toh and his colleagues on the Local Organizing Committee have assembled a very high-level program, which will also  include for the first time “Hot topic abstracts” and regular abstracts that will be presented as e-posters. This novelty will help to highlight the most recent achievements in the basic and clinical research and will be a great challenge for young investigators.

I warmly recommend all ISTH members and friends to consider attending the ISTH/SSC meeting in Liverpool. To maintain the high level reached by the SSC is important that those who are not currently a member, not only participate in the meeting, but make an active contribution, participating in the working projects and registries, and become a member of one of the subcommittees.
The dynamic and energizing atmosphere of Liverpool will provide the perfect setting for the offspring of new projects and collaborations, and will guarantee a great success of the 2012 ISTH/SSC conference.
I hope to see many of you next June in Liverpool!

    Anna Falanga, M.D.
    ISTH SSC Chairman

Welcome Message from Henri Bounameaux, Chair of Council

Henri Bounameaux, MDDear Colleagues and Friends,

It is my distinct privilege to extend you a warm welcome to Liverpool for our 2012 SSC meeting. Cheng-Hock and his colleagues have set up a great program aiming at rendering our off-congress year meetings especially attractive for our participants.

Since 2008, beside the usual in-depth work of the Subcommittees, our SSC meetings include a large educational program that targets young basic and clinical scientists. Because of the smaller format of these meetings, compared to our biennial congresses, it also allows to experiment innovations. Dr. Toh has to be commended for having accepted to introduce for the first time “Hot topic abstracts” reporting late-breaking results in basic and clinical science, and also regular abstracts that will be featured as “e-posters” and will be trainee-focused. These two initiatives should enhance the participation to our SSC meeting and its overall interest. It also reflects our goal to foster educational experiences where bench meets bed for the benefit of our patients.

Following Cairo and Kyoto, we are coming back to Europe, and I have no doubt that Liverpool will offer a fantastic venue. The second largest economic city of England, with its major harbor, its two large cathedrals, its multicultural character, Liverpool has also been the European capital of culture in 2008. Its worldwide popularity however is probably mainly due to the Beatles (emblematically, its airport is named after John Lennon) and to its two strong football clubs, Everton and Liverpool.

There are many other reasons why you should join us in Liverpool and attend our 58th SSC meeting. But to say it in a few words, “Come for the science, the culture, and the friendship!”

I am looking forward to greeting you in Liverpool next June.

    Henri Bounameaux, MD
    ISTH, Chairman of Council

Welcome Message from Tom Reiser, Executive Director

    Henri Bounameaux, MDLadies and Gentlemen,

In addition to all the exciting scientific aspects of the SSC 2012, ISTH meetings provide a unique opportunity for our global thrombosis and haemostasis community to come together, network and create meaningful personal and professional exchanges.

This is so critical in today’s technology-driven world. It enhances the learning experience and contributes to nurturing existing contacts and establishing new and meaningful connections. Many of these may lead to collaborations and friendships long beyond the end of any meeting. We consider this community function to be a very important role for our Society. In particular, SSC meetings lend themselves to effective networking between science, academia and industry.

SSC 2012 will also be a fresh incubator of innovative ideas in engagement, interactivity and education.
We believe that this sign posts our forward looking approach and how future developments can be even more impactful. We look forward to exploring these together with you in Liverpool.

We also hope our meeting will not only bring together many current members but also attract many non-members. This will be beneficial to all participants. Non-members will benefit from the excellent programme and also experience the spirit of the ISTH. It will also allow them to learn more about our Society and our many scientific, educational and capacity building projects and particularly the fundamentally important work of the SSC.

We look forward to seeing you in Liverpool – it will not only be a scientifically stimulating meeting but
also a great opportunity to network and have fun.
